July 30th, 2010

My sketch for my next painting. It took a few tries to capture my dad. In the beginning, he was posing too much. Posing like he was thinking, smiling, probably due to the awkwardness of being in front of the camera, but in the end I just told him to think of North Korea. To actually think about them instead of the picture, and it was as simple as that. I'm debating whether I should arrange the heads of the military officers into the shape of Korea. We'll see.

Self Portrait

So I finished the white of the men, a nice double layer on the red flags, and added some details to my face and hair. Unfortunately, I left my camera in Cali and the camera I have to work with is not the best. I still have some shadow work/rendering left to do on about half the men, but couldn't do them due to surrounding wet paint.

For now, I'll leave this aside and work on my next painting. I took pictures of my dad yesterday morning. I'll either re-post tonight with a sketch, or tomorrow. I was hoping to get 3 paintings done in my time in Mexico, but it seems with one week left, I'll need to work hard to just get my dad's somewhat developed. I know this time not to make the background pattern so complicated...much too time consuming for a summer project.
I guess it's 3...if you count in my practice painting.

July 24th, 2010

After a couple more days of painting, I haven't been able to get much done the past two days due to visitors making their way to Mexico. I did get about half of the men's detailing done. It really takes longer than it looks. I'm pretty excited to have it all finished. I couldn't do the other half a couple of days ago because the background green was still wet and mixing in. Now, if I get the rest of the men done and do another layer on the flags and hair, I'll be fairly content with the background.

Only picture I could manage to edit down in the time I had allotted.

July 20th, 2010

So I've been sick the past few days, and while I continued to paint, I failed to update my blog. Sorry!

I've mentioned this before, but oil painting really does take much more time, and as I haven't really painted anything at this size requiring so much detail and intricacy, it is taking quite a while. I've painted everyday except for Sunday for at least a couple of hours each day yet I still have a ways to go. I forgot to take pictures after painting the blue of the men and their heads and flags, but I do have pictures from a couple of days ago and today.

Honestly, it's a bit weird documenting my painting because I'm used to people only looking at the final outcome. It's pretty embarrassing to show the in betweens, but oh well!

This was...Saturday? I was definitely dissatisfied as it didn't look like me at all.

These two were taken today. Second coat of green on the background and my face is coming along.

Hopefully I'll be somewhat "done" by the end of this week. But I wouldn't be surprised if it carried over 'til next. Whether it's done or not, I plan to have my sketch for my next painting early next week. My dad asked to be next. Lol. So, after a little photo session with my dad sometime this week, I'll post up my sketch asap.

July 14th, 2010

Four hours of painting and I only got the background of the background done. -_- My shoulder hurts and after all that work, my dad who came home early today looks at it and says, "you should paint a real background. Why are you wasting your time painting the same thing over and over again?"

Talk about discouragement. But I'll dismiss it as him being appreciative of genre paintings of the painting era maybe 100 or so years ago. I hadn't really wanted to explain the reason for my choosing to do a pattern as my background, but maybe I should? I didn't think I would have to nor that I should. For now I'll just say that it's a commentary on North Korea and the lives of most of its people.

Anyway, I hope to be able to finish at least the blue for all the little mens' uniforms tomorrow. If I could get their red flags and their head and hands, that would be great. I really did not know that this would be so time consuming. I thought the worst was over when I sketched the pattern on the canvas...but I was wrong. haha. Too late now, I'm just going to have to hope it turns out as nicely as I picture it in my head, and that in the end it will all be worth it.

July 10th 2010 (part II)

This is a quick sketch I did on Photoshop for my first painting I'll start next week.
It's a self portrait, and the background is a pattern inspired from one of the photos of North Korea I shared earlier this week.

As most people know, North Korea is known for their amazingly choreographed mass performances. Although the photograph and pattern I created consist of all young men, I feel that they are near my age group. Perhaps I have cousins that are a part of these performances. Maybe my brother would have been a part of them.

The end! For the time being anyway. Now I'm off to work on my sketch(es?) and I'll post them up tomorrow or maybe even tonight. :)

July 9th 2010

Painting update! Almost done! Well, you're technically never done, but since this is just a practice, I'll just be doing final touch ups and details tomorrow, and the end! I know people like Danny will not understand why it took another 4 or so hours from the last picture, but it did.

July 8th 2010

Today I had a shorter 1-2 hour session of painting. The wind was quite still today and the fumes began to bother me so I stopped short. However, the day's highlight was an unexpected surprise.

My parents had told me earlier this week that their friends had wanted to take me out to dinner since I came to visit Mexico, and while I dreaded going because I knew I would be stuck in hours of after dinner conversation that they would engage in, I had no choice and so I ate and I sat. Sitting in between my mom and my dad, I was in the perfect location to hear both the men's conversations and the women's conversations. The highlight came from the men's conversation.

They began talking politics and the Korean embassy, and about the Koreans in Mexico. It seemed that one of the men was very active in the area of Korean politics here and so one thing led to another and my ears perked as I heard my dad ask if he had met with the representatives from the North Korean Embassy. The thought had never even crossed my mind. But what I would hear next was even more to my interest. The man responded that he had run into them at restaurants once in a while, and that they were usually a younger group and so they actually hung out with younger Koreans here in Mexico. Then, he proceeded to say, "actually, there were a whole bunch of them in Ghana in the 7-80's."

As soon as he said this, the other men in the group were surprised to hear such a thing. But me, having read two books on North Korea recently, I instantly tied it with Kim Il Sung's efforts to expand the following of Juche, Kim's version of socialism. I remembered reading in the books that they set up centers of Juche in various third-world countries in an attempt to proliferate their beliefs. It turns out that the man's father was some big businessman in Ghana--to the point that he was in the President's social circle. So the man continued to tell the story of the numerous North Korean representatives that were there, and how they would schedule film showings which were supposed to tell the story of the Korean War (most likely a distorted version) to the public. His father would then order about 50 or so people with specific orders not to hurt anyone, but to stop the showing (I think they went and broke the projectors or caused a scene). He said the North Koreans had a lot of farmland in Ghana, and a fairly large presence, but that they pretty much disappeared by the 90's...which falls in line with what I've been reading.

I don't know if any of that was interesting to you readers, but for me, it was exciting to directly hear someone's narrative that coincided with history that I had just been reading. So anyway, that was the highlight of my day. That little anecdote made the 3 hours of sitting worth-while...almost.

July 7th 2010

I just got back in from another 2-3 hour painting session.

I think I'm slowly getting the hang of oils, but for some reason I feel like I'm doing the same thing that I did when I used acrylics...but as my mom said, there is no correct way of doing it, it's for the artist to figure out the best way...so I'm just trying this and that. Though the thunderstorm yesterday prevented me from painting, I think I should still be fine to finish this practice painting this week. Hopefully I'll have the first sketch by this week too.

I'll leave you with a few landscape pictures of North Korea. According to the books I am reading, the North Korea has beautiful natural resources and before the war, it was in the northern portion of Korea where life was a bit busier, livelier, and more advanced. It's strange to think of it that way because for all of my life, South Korea has been the more "advanced" country, but even for a good time after the war, the North was further advanced than the South, mainly due to their rich resources.

When I look at these pictures, I remember how I had once asked my grandfather about 5 years back, where he would want to live if he could choose from any of the countries and places he's visited and or lived in. After a minute of thought, his answer was North Korea. When I had heard that then, I couldn't fully grasp why he would choose North Korea over the US or Europe or even South Korea. But now, having learned more about his history, his family, the status of North Korea in the time that he grew up there, and taking into account these magnificent landscapes, I think I understand.

July 5th, 2010

I have begun painting! But... it's a practice painting. As odd as it may sound, it's my first time oil painting, and so before I paint my actual pieces for my project, I wanted to test it out and get used to the new medium.

I began painting over the weekend and have just cleaned up after a 2.5 hour session of painting today.

This was after my first session over the weekend.

Shot of my make-shift studio. It's actually the balcony/hallway outside my apartment.

Progress of painting at this time.

I have to admit, because I've been so accustomed to acrylics, it was a bit different, and I'm still adjusting. Oils require much more patience in my opinion.

I plan to have this painting completed this week, and sketches for my actual painting also. Oh, and I'll be posting a few images I found online of North Korea that I plan to work off of also. Normally, I like to take my own photographs to use as reference for my paintings, however as I am unable to...thank goodness for the internet!
